Three Killed as Israel Launches Fresh Strikes on Lebanon

(MENAFN) At least three people were killed and seven others wounded in the early hours of Thursday after an Israeli airstrike hit the southern Lebanese town of Ansariya, the Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed.

The overnight attack compounded an already devastating Wednesday, during which Israeli drone and airstrike campaigns across southern and eastern Lebanon claimed 16 lives and left 21 others injured — among them paramedics — marking yet another breach of an active ceasefire agreement.

In a significant and alarming escalation, Israeli warplanes also pounded Beirut's southern suburbs later that same day — the first such strike on the capital's outskirts since a temporary ceasefire took hold on April 17. Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that three missiles struck a residential apartment building in the Ghobeiry area, near Haret Hreik in southern Beirut. Israeli authorities claimed the target was a senior commander within Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force.

Despite the ceasefire — announced on April 17 and formally extended through May 17 — the Israeli military has sustained daily strikes across Lebanon, coupled with the systematic demolition of homes across dozens of villages, drawing stark comparisons to its prolonged and devastating campaign in Gaza.

The cumulative toll of Israeli attacks since March 2 has reached catastrophic proportions: at least 2,715 people killed, 8,353 wounded, and more than 1.6 million displaced — roughly one in every five Lebanese residents — according to the latest official figures.

Israel continues to occupy swaths of southern Lebanon, including territories it has held for decades alongside new ground seized during the 2023–2024 war. Its forces have pushed approximately 10 kilometers — or 6.2 miles — beyond the southern border in the course of the current conflict.
