US Justice Department Engages Anti-Abortion Groups After Recent Firings

(MENAFN) The US Justice Department held discussions on Wednesday with anti-abortion advocates, just hours after several employees were dismissed over allegations that they had worked too closely with abortion-rights organizations during the previous administration, according to reports.

John Mize, chief executive of Americans United for Life, said he met with officials from the department’s Civil Rights Division and expressed support for a report released by a Trump administration working group.

The report claims that during former President Joe Biden’s administration, the Justice Department collaborated with abortion-rights organizations in enforcing the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, a 1994 law designed to protect abortion clinics and patients from threats and acts of violence.

The current administration said at least four employees were terminated in connection with their involvement in that work, framing the decision as part of efforts to address what it described as improper use of the department.

Mize welcomed the firings, describing the alleged coordination between prosecutors and advocacy groups as “troubling.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche also criticized previous prosecutorial practices, stating that officials had worked “hand in hand” with outside organizations.

A Justice Department spokesperson said the Civil Rights Division regularly engages with a range of groups holding differing views, while emphasizing that enforcement priorities are determined according to the administration’s policy direction.
