Lavrov Says Taiwan, South China Sea Face 'Dangerous Games'

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov issued a stark warning Tuesday, declaring that destabilizing tensions are intensifying across Asia's most volatile flashpoints as he met with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing.

Opening the high-level diplomatic talks, Lavrov aligned himself with Wang's bleak diagnosis of the current global order, agreeing that the "foundations of international relations are being severely tested today" — a shared assessment that set a combative tone for the bilateral discussions.

The top Russian diplomat pointed to Venezuela, the Middle East, and Ukraine as evidence of mounting global instability, before leveling accusations at European nations, claiming they are exploiting the Russia-Ukraine war to "hatch plans to create a new aggressive bloc in the west of the Eurasian continent" centered on Kyiv — a structure he alleged is ultimately designed to target Moscow.

Lavrov then broadened his warning eastward, stating: "In the eastern part of the Eurasian continent, dangerous games are also continuing: both in the Taiwan issue and in the South China Sea issue, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula is escalating."

He further accused Western powers of working to fracture Southeast Asia's regional architecture, charging that so-called "small-geometry, bloc-like structures" are being engineered to "disintegrate" the ASEAN-centric framework — a move he framed as a calculated effort to simultaneously contain both Moscow and Beijing.

Closing his remarks on a note of resolve, Lavrov said: "Our entire vast continent requires constant attention," adding confidence that he and Wang will be able to discuss their practical steps in line with the initiatives put forward by their presidents in detail.
