France Calls on Israel to End Regional Wars, Follow International Law
Speaking before parliament on Tuesday, Jean-Noel Barrot said that policy changes are needed from the Israeli government, reiterating support for reviewing the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which remains under consideration.
He criticized recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon carried out on April 8, which reportedly resulted in more than 300 deaths, warning that such actions could lead to a prolonged occupation of Lebanese territory.
Lebanese authorities have reported that over 2,000 people have been killed and thousands more injured since the escalation of Israeli military operations beginning in March. Israel is also said to maintain a presence in parts of southern Lebanon, including areas occupied for years and others taken during earlier rounds of conflict.
Regarding Gaza, Barrot condemned the insufficient flow of humanitarian aid, stating that assistance “is not getting in nearly enough and is not reaching the Gazan and Palestinian population who desperately need it.”
He also criticized what he described as an “unacceptable” financial blockade imposed on Palestinian territories, alongside the expansion of settlement activity and rising violence by extremist settlers, which he said has been carried out with impunity.
Barrot added that a new EU-level sanctions package targeting “extremist and violent settlers” is currently under discussion.
