India Relaxes Kerosene Regulations Amid Energy Supply Strain
According to reports, the temporary policy—set to remain in effect for 60 days—permits kerosene sales at designated fuel stations across 21 states and union territories. The decision was announced by the country’s energy authorities on Sunday.
The adjustment is intended to streamline storage processes, transportation, and final delivery to consumers, particularly as disruptions in energy supply chains persist due to instability in the Middle East.
”Amid the evolving situation in West Asia, the Government of India is maintaining continuous oversight and implementing appropriate preparedness and response measures to ensure stability across key sectors,” the ministry said in a statement. “Efforts remain focused on sustaining uninterrupted energy supplies, safeguarding maritime operations, and extending necessary assistance to Indian nationals in the region.”
India remains heavily dependent on energy imports, sourcing roughly 85% of its oil and nearly half of its natural gas from abroad. A significant portion—around half—of its crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments typically pass through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Amid the current pressures, the country is also considering restarting direct imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia, a practice that had been paused following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.
