Congo Reelects Incumbent President Denis Sassou Nguesso to Fifth Term

(MENAFN) Congo's Constitutional Court has formally ratified the outcome of this month's presidential election, cementing the reelection of long-ruling incumbent Denis Sassou Nguesso to a fifth consecutive term in office.

Nguesso secured a commanding 94.90% of all votes cast, outpacing six rival candidates, according to a statement issued by Auguste Iloki, president of the Constitutional Court. The figure represents a marginal upward revision from the provisional tally of 94.82% announced on March 17 by Interior Minister Raymond Mboulou.

The court simultaneously rejected a legal challenge filed by candidate Dave Mafoula, who had sought to nullify the March 15 poll on the grounds of alleged electoral irregularities. Approximately 2.6 million voters participated in the election, yielding a turnout exceeding 85%. Nguesso, now 82, is scheduled to be inaugurated for his new term on April 16, authorities confirmed.

The landslide result, however, carries an asterisk: two prominent opposition figures boycotted the vote entirely, citing what they described as systemic unfairness in the electoral process — an absence that critics argue rendered the contest uncompetitive from the outset.

Nguesso's grip on Congo spans nearly five decades, making him one of Africa's longest-serving rulers. He first ascended to power in 1979, before suffering defeat in the 1992 election and retreating into exile in France. He returned in 1997, seizing back power through an armed uprising that ousted then-Prime Minister Pascal Lissouba.

Since reclaiming the presidency, Nguesso has maintained an unbroken hold on the country, running under the banner of the Congolese Party of Labor. His grip on power was further entrenched following constitutional amendments in 2015 that reset presidential term limits and abolished the age cap on candidates — changes widely seen as engineered to extend his rule indefinitely. His previous victories in 2002, 2009, 2016, and 2021 — the last of which he won with over 88% of the vote — have each followed a similar pattern of dominance at the ballot box.
