Volkswagen May Start Producing Army Components for Israel
According to reports, the German automotive manufacturer is engaged in discussions with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems on a possible agreement to manufacture parts such as launchers and transport vehicles for the Iron Dome at its Osnabrück facility.
The initiative, reportedly supported by German authorities, is intended in part to secure approximately 2,300 jobs. However, critics contend that prioritizing economic stability may come at the expense of broader ethical considerations.
A senior academic in modern and contemporary history emphasized that such a development should not be viewed as routine, stating: "It is not a normal thing in post-war Germany to happen... Volkswagen is not a regular private company, and the political responsibility is bigger here even than it would be with any other weapons-producing company."
Another scholar pointed out that, despite ongoing public discourse surrounding the company’s historical accountability, these considerations appear to be lacking in practice. He remarked: "It is simply business and about making profits. If Volkswagen cannot do it with cars, it will do so with arms."
The timing of the reported negotiations has also intensified criticism, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Observers argue that Germany’s political stance on the war has created an environment in which such industrial decisions can proceed without significant resistance.
One academic suggested that the government’s framing of the situation effectively removes barriers for companies considering involvement in defense production, stating: "As the German political establishment, until today, does not admit that what is happening in Gaza is a genocide but Israel's alleged right to self-defense, therefore Volkswagen has no reason not to produce Israeli weapons."
He further described the potential agreement as a “catastrophe” from both historical and moral standpoints, adding that the “strategic decision” illustrates a broader European willingness to benefit from systems like the Iron Dome.
