Russian Oil Tanker Arrives in Cuba Amid US Pressure

(MENAFN) A Russian oil tanker has successfully reached Cuba, delivering a major humanitarian fuel shipment as the island continues to grapple with prolonged shortages caused by a US blockade that has strained energy supplies and triggered repeated blackouts.

According to Russia’s Energy Ministry, the vessel Anatoly Kolodkin transported approximately 100,000 tons of crude oil and has now docked at the port of Matanzas, where it is awaiting unloading procedures.

Although US Coast Guard ships were operating nearby, intervention was ultimately avoided. “the Trump administration did not order those vessels to act,” an official familiar with the situation told The New York Times.

“Barring orders instructing it otherwise, the Coast Guard planned to let the tanker reach Cuba as of Sunday afternoon,” the source added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

US President Donald Trump has consistently warned of potential tariffs targeting nations that supply fuel to Cuba. Still, while addressing reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, he acknowledged that the US permitted the Russian shipment to proceed, citing humanitarian considerations.
