UNRWA Chief Says New Israeli Measures Violate International Law

(MENAFN) Recent actions by Israel in the occupied West Bank represent “a new blow against international law,” the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees said Tuesday.

Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of UNRWA, warned that the measures could accelerate settlement expansion and further erode prospects for Palestinians.

“The measures amount to a recipe for increased control, hopelessness and violence,” Lazzarini wrote on social media, adding that the decisions set dangerous precedents with potential global implications.

The comments followed Israel’s Security Cabinet approval on Sunday of measures intended to modify the legal and civil framework in the West Bank, consolidating Israeli authority over the territory.

According to reports, the steps include repealing a law that prohibited private Israelis from purchasing land in the West Bank, unsealing land ownership records, and transferring control over building permits in a settlement area near Hebron from a Palestinian municipality to Israel’s civil administration.
