India Urges Russia to Release Indian Nationals from Armed Forces
This statement follows reports from India indicating an increase in the number of Indian nationals being recruited by Russia to participate in the conflict in Ukraine.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized that over the past year, the government has “underlined the risks and dangers inherent in this course of action and cautioned Indian citizens accordingly.”
“We have also taken up the matter with Russian authorities, both in Delhi and Moscow, asking that this practice be ended and that our nationals be released,” Jaiswal added on Thursday.
The ministry strongly advised, “all Indian nationals to stay away from any offers to join the Russian army as this is a course fraught with danger.”
In July, the Indian parliament was informed that 127 Indian nationals were serving in the Russian armed forces. Of these, 98 had their services terminated “as a result of sustained engagement between the Indian and Russian governments.”
Currently, the ministry reports that 13 Indian nationals remain in Russian military service, with 12 of them reportedly missing according to Russian sources.
Earlier in March, the Indian government confirmed that 12 Indian nationals had lost their lives during the ongoing conflict.
