France Rallies International Support to Aid Crisis-Stricken Lebanon
(MENAFN) France remains steadfast in rallying international support for Lebanon, French presidential envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian told Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Thursday, signaling intensified efforts to stabilize the crisis-stricken country.
During a meeting in Beirut, Le Drian confirmed that France is actively moving forward with plans to host two upcoming international conferences—one focused on boosting the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces and another dedicated to driving reconstruction and economic recovery.
According to an official statement from Lebanon's Presidency, Le Drian highlighted recent steps by the Lebanese government, including reforms in banking secrecy, financial sector restructuring, and the military's initiative to centralize weapons under state control, as encouraging signs that could unlock broader international aid.
In response, President Aoun reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to enacting economic and financial reforms, stressing that these efforts are not only driven by global demands but also reflect Lebanon’s internal consensus on the need for systemic recovery.
Aoun emphasized that bolstering the military holds equal importance to reconstruction, underscoring that lasting stability and security are essential foundations for recovery and development.
He noted that the military has already launched a plan to eliminate non-state armed groups operating south of the Litani River. However, he cautioned that full deployment of Lebanese forces remains hindered by the continued Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory.
Aoun called on both France and the United States to exert pressure on Israel to end violations of Lebanese sovereignty and to uphold international resolutions.
Despite domestic political divisions, Aoun struck a unifying tone, asserting that Lebanon’s social fabric remains intact. “There is no fear over national cohesion, and no one is working to create a rift regarding fundamental national issues,” he stated.
