YouTube increases AI-motorized protections for teen consumers in US
If a user is identified as a teen, YouTube will automatically activate age-appropriate features, including turning off personalized ads, enabling digital wellbeing tools, and limiting repetitive content suggestions. Users who believe they’ve been incorrectly flagged as underage will have the option to verify their age using official ID or a credit card.
The new system builds on YouTube's earlier tools like YouTube Kids and supervised accounts, and has already been tested in other unnamed regions. The company emphasized that it will closely observe the US rollout before expanding globally.
“YouTube is committed to leading in technology that ensures teen safety while respecting their privacy,” the company said. Age-restricted content will remain accessible only to users confirmed to be 18 or older. YouTube also plans to collaborate with creators and monitor user feedback during the implementation.
